Just this past weekend 26th of June I took the time to get my fishing license and planned to get the boat up to Alum Creek for the first time this year. Things have been so hectic it has been tough to make time for fishing. So as you can tell I don’t have my priority’s right.
We got out to the lake about 6:30 am got launched and tied on a couple of Rebel Deep Wee R’s and decided we would troll a bit and see if any sauger would take our bait.
Within minutes from the ramp we had our first fish on and it was taking out line. I had my drag set on my spinning reels set rather loose since I was using 8lb test Trilene. After wearing the fish down a bit we got the fish in the boat and to our surprise it was a fairly nice size Muskie. At the time I didn’t have a tape measure but I quickly took a picture and got it back in the water for a quick release.
I didn’t go any further I know then 50 yards and I had another fish on that was taking out line. I stopped the boat and seen this one could possibly get into my other line I had out. So I began cranking my other bait in while holding this other fish tight on its line. When the bait got close to the boat it suddenly started taking out line and I had a double going. Double Muskie which I couldn’t believe this was happening. I boated both of these fish which were about the same size of the first fish.
I have actually done quite a bit of fishing in my time at Cave Run Lake and Green River Resiv0ir back in Kentucky but I have never see days where I put three nice muskie in the boat. Many days after casting hundreds of times I was more happy to get a strike from Kamagra Gold a big old muskie.
I trolled on up past the beach at Alum which I caught a pretty nice smallie Small Mouth Bass and released that for others to have some fun with. Made my way across the dam and headed back down the other side.
Once I got up near one point again I had another fish on that was taking line. Once again it was another Muskie. This one was bigger than the first three fish and put up quite a nice fight. Once again we got the picture and back into the water rather quickly. At this point I wasn’t quite sure what was going on but knew the Muskie must be feeding very aggressively in about 18 to 20 foot of water.
At this point in time we had put 4 Muskie in the boat and 1 small mouth. Still haven’t see anything that resembled a sauger at this point in time. We continued to troll just a short ways up and had another fish on that was taking line out to a point where I wasn’t sure if it would slow down before it got to the end of my spool. This seemed to be a much heavier fish. We continued to reel and get it back closer to the boat. With 8lb test we took our time in wearing these fish down as much as we could. This fish took well over 30 minutes for me to wear down to where I could get him in the boat. There was another boater who stopped to watch the excitement and offered to net him if I needed help. If I had known at the time that Neal the fellow that offered to net the fish had a real net that would not have had any trouble netting it as my little net did I would have gladly let him do the scoop. But none the less we managed to get this fish in the boat. This was a horse of a muskie in my book or at least the biggest one I have ever boated.
Neal offered over his tape measure so we got to measure the length at 40 inches and quickly snapped another picture and returned the fish for someone else to catch down the road. I appreciate all the help Neal had given me including making sure the fish was going to make it once we released it. I noticed once I released it that it was swimming around the surface. Neal moved his boat over and touch the tail and it swam off and out of sight with ease.
This had been a fishing day at Alum Creek that I would remember for a long time. Shortly after noon time my sone Raymond came up to the lake. I picked him up at the marina and withing 30 minutes he had landed a muskie about 34 inches. So all in all it turned out to be a nice day on the water.
If you get a chance get up to Alum Creek and try your hand at some of these Muskie. All mine were taken on a Candy Apple Red or a Crawfish color Deep Wee R Rebel.
I am sure Alum holds some very nice Muskie after seeing the size of these fish. It could prove to hold a real winner in the future.
Enjoy the day on the lake if you get to go.
Best,
Scott Gordon
